Position: ASSISTANT TO TRAINER/BARN MANAGER
Under the general direction of the Trainer/Barn Manager, the Assistant to the Stables Trainer/Barn Manager is responsible to assist with the overall operation of the Stable the day to day operations of the facility, part-time staff and horses of the Palatine Stables. The exempt position is full time, with comprehensive benefits and paid time off benefits.
Assist in the daily care and maintenance of Park District owned horses and ponies for programs and services, and all boarded horses/ponies at the facility. Assist in the teaching and training of all students and their horses including boarders advancing from the Riding School Program into the Advanced Riding Program. Assist in the scheduling and maintenance of the lesson programs for the Riding School operations. Scheduling part-time staff required for lessons, pony rides, pony parties and summer camp. Schedule, organize and manage the In-house Student Horse Show Series. Prepare facility and schedule for the day. Maintain appropriate records pertaining to horse health, farrier services and all other a la carte services provided by the Stable.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum five 5 years of progressive hands-on experience and knowledge or equivalent experience of the equine industry and stable operations, knowledge of daily horse care and behaviors and health. Good problem solving skills. Required to have basic veterinary skills and knowledge including wound care, injections, bandaging techniques and medication. Strong supervisory skills for part-time staff. Ability to work harmoniously and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees, patrons, community groups and other units of local government. Ability to multi-task, troubleshoot, problem solve, meet deadlines and effectively communicate verbally and written. Proficient in Microsoft Office products experience with VSI RecTrac and Time pro a plus.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. in materials, equipment and supplies .Standing and walking for long periods of time. General work area is outdoors and indoors with un-controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting. Working conditions in the barn and the arenas can be dusty, dirty and smelly. Work very close to large, live animals. Work around uneven ground, fencing and terrain. Frequent exposure to natural and varied weather conditions while supervising employees or attending job related activities.

Starting Salary Range $34,000 - $40,220 depending on qualifications and experience
